Bluetooth came out of a Swedish town of under a hundred thousand people
- Bluetooth: Lund, initiated 1989, launched 1999
- Stockholm: at least 41 unicorns
- Spotify, Klarna, King, Skype, Mojang
- Gothenburg sells software it once sold as steel
Three editorial pieces on the Sweden digital market. Editorial register, no product pitch. Companion series: Ireland, Malta, Denmark, Finland, Poland.
How Sweden’s tech scene grew
Bluetooth work begins in Lund
Initiated at Ericsson’s research operation by Nils Rydbeck with Johan Ullman, and engineered substantially by Jaap Haartsen, the Dutch engineer at the Lund facility generally called the father of Bluetooth.
The digital economy here
Stockholm’s startup output is genuinely exceptional. The city is credited with producing at least forty-one unicorns — Spotify, Klarna, King, Skype and Mojang among them — from a country of ten million people. Spotify was founded in 2006 and Klarna listed at $14 billion in 2025.
That record is real, widely reported, and almost entirely irrelevant to anyone selling digital services to Swedish small businesses. The unicorns build in-house. Underneath the headline sits an ordinary and rather demanding capital-city economy: Swedish buyers expect design competence as a baseline, are among the most digitally comfortable consumers in Europe, and are unusually intolerant of hard selling. Those three facts matter far more to a supplier than the unicorn count does.
The other two cities run different pipelines entirely. Bluetooth was developed at Ericsson’s research operation in Lund — initiated in 1989 by Nils Rydbeck with Johan Ullman, engineered substantially by Jaap Haartsen, and launched publicly in 1999 — and Lund University still runs significant wireless research through 5G and beyond. It is a university town first, with a population that swings hard with the academic year. Gothenburg is an industrial port city that has spent forty years converting heavy manufacturing into engineering services: the automotive sector remains the anchor, and the software content of a modern vehicle has turned much of that supply chain into a software business without anyone renaming it. Chalmers University of Technology feeds the deep-tech and engineering side of the Swedish scene from there — a rather different pipeline from Stockholm’s consumer-internet one.
Where the work happens
One consumer-internet capital, one wireless research town, and one engineering city — three separate pipelines that rarely feed each other.
Stockholm
At least 41 unicorns from a country of ten million. Worth knowing, and worth knowing that those companies build in-house — the market that buys from suppliers is the ordinary capital-city economy underneath.
Bluetooth, Lund
Initiated at Ericsson Lund in 1989 and launched publicly in 1999. Now in essentially every consumer electronic device made, from a town of under a hundred thousand.
Lund University
One of the oldest in Scandinavia, still running significant wireless research through 5G and beyond, with a research park attached and a population that follows the academic year.
Chalmers, Gothenburg
Feeds the deep-tech and engineering side of the Swedish startup scene — a different pipeline from Stockholm’s, in a city whose automotive supply chain quietly became a software business.
How Swedish businesses buy websites
Swedish for consumer-facing work, English readily for anything technical — proficiency is very high, but Swedish still signals you are actually here. The register is the important part: Swedish buyers are unusually intolerant of hard selling, and a page that pushes will do worse than one that simply explains.
Design competence is a baseline expectation rather than a differentiator. A site that looks careless is read as a statement about the business, in much the same way it is in Denmark. And in Gothenburg specifically the buyer is an engineer or reports to one, procuring on specifications and documentation rather than on presentation.
Trades and home services
Swedish-first and local. Name the areas you cover; distances outside the three cities are real.
Clinics, salons and studios
Online booking and card or Swish payment are simply assumed. Publish prices — Swedes will not ring to ask.
Shops, cafés and hospitality
Seasonal daylight changes trading patterns sharply, and Lund’s population empties out between terms. Put real hours on the page.
Engineering and B2B
Gothenburg’s automotive supply chain sells into international programmes and buys the way industrial companies do: specifications, documentation, long cycles.

Where was Bluetooth developed?
Why FastSites works here
A market that dislikes being sold to is a market suited to a page that just states the facts. What you do, what it costs, how to reach you — and nothing on the page working to persuade you.
Live in days, published price, built mobile-first and cleanly designed, because in Sweden that is the baseline rather than the upsell. Tell us whether you need Swedish, English or both.
