The number
Between 2020 and 2024, graduates of Politecnico di Milano and Bocconi University founded nearly half of Italy's startups — one engineering school and one business school, both in the same city, feeding the same regional economy.
That pipeline shows up in the regional statistics too: Lombardy has 3,394 registered "innovative startups" as of Q1 2025, 27.89% of Italy's national total and the highest of any region.
What that produces
Milan is Italy's financial capital as well as its startup capital, which gives it a buyer that is unusually design-conscious and internationally minded by Italian standards — Milan is also the country's fashion capital, and that industry's visual standards bleed into everything else sold there.
It is the most expensive and most competitive Italian city for a small supplier, but also the one where a strong portfolio is most likely to be recognised and rewarded rather than merely tolerated.
The buyer
Milanese business moves faster than the Italian average and is more comfortable in English, particularly in finance and fashion. Presentation is taken seriously in a way that isn't universal across Italy.
The practical read
Treat Milan like a design-literate capital city, not a generic Italian market — invest in how your own work looks before pitching it, because this is the audience most likely to judge on exactly that.

Caveats and sourcing
- Verifiable — the Bocconi-reported graduate founder share and the MIMIT regional startup registration figures.
- Characterising claims — the fashion-industry influence on buyer expectations and the design-literacy argument are interpretation.
