The anchor and what followed
ESET, one of Europe's largest privately-held cybersecurity companies, was founded in Bratislava in 1992 and remains headquartered there — predating Slovakia's own independence by a year.
More recent exits confirm the pattern continuing: Cisco acquired Bratislava-founded audience-engagement platform Slido, announced December 2020, and Bratislava-founded customer-data platform Exponea was acquired by Bloomreach in January 2021, adding roughly 200 staff to what was then a 300-person company. Bratislava ranks first in Slovakia on StartupBlink's ecosystem index.
What that produces
A capital with three decades of continuous software-company formation, culminating in real international acquisitions rather than only local growth — a track record longer than most cities in this series can claim.
Bratislava's proximity to Vienna, less than an hour away, also gives it a genuinely cross-border labour market and business culture that most Slovak cities don't share.
The buyer
Professional, internationally exposed, and comfortable with English in the tech-adjacent layer. The wider capital-city economy is Slovak-first, price-aware relative to Vienna, and benefits from the cross-border commuting relationship.
The practical read
Bratislava's software pedigree means local buyers have realistic expectations of what good digital work looks like — vague promises will be recognised as such by a market that has produced multiple real acquisitions of its own.
